Just removed the 30-06 barrel on my new Axis rifle and noticed something was different. No Barrel lug? Is this something that Savage does not use on the Axis rifle? I have a shaw 250 savage barrel I was going to put back on, but now wonder if I need to purchase a barrel lug for it?

The Axis does not have the standard 110 series recoil lug. They use a small piece of metal simply embedded in the stock. If you notice on the front of the receiver their is a small area drilled out. This is where the action and the Axis recoil lug that sits in the stock mate.

So no worries as long as you have a small shank barrel it should work fine.

Some folks have done Axis builds with a standard 10/110 barrel nut, but it requires that notched section at the front of the receiver that Rosco mentioned to be turned down. Then the Axis lug is removed from the stock, and the standard lug will fit in the same place once the barreled action is put in place! Sharpshootersupply offers this service.

None of my Axis projects have had that treatment, though. There may well be some advantages to using the regular, barrel mounted lug, but they have not been made manifest at my level of shooting.
