I've got a short action waiting for a build. My plans are to build a 600 yard deer rifle on it with a heavy sporter barrel, most likely @ 24" long. I'm debating between a 6.5 Creedmoor and a 6.5x47. Thoughts /advice/suggestions? Advantages/disadvantages to either?

Either one will do nicely. Personally, I would go with the Creedmoor.

There's hardly any difference between the two. If you think you'd benefit from being able to buy factory match ammo, go with the Creed. If you're starting from the beginning, and are going to be strictly handloading for it, I'd go with the x47.

That's why I went with the Creed, when I started out, and if I had it to do again, I'd have gone with the x47.

I should have specified, I am starting with an action and building up from there. I plan to shoot only handloads out of this gun.

Lot's of information on the 6.5x47 Lapua on 6mmbr.com. This one might be of interest to you. http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/65x47/

Personally, I'd probably go with the x47 then. That's just my 2¢.

Biggest advantage of the x47 is the Lapua brass. Some would consider it a significant advantage. I have a Creedmoor and have no complaints (yet).

Thanks guys. I've decided to go with the 6.5x47. Brass is arriving tomorrow. Now I need to figure out what contour barrel to get so I can order my barrel and stock.

Keep us posted on your build progress and eventually how it shoots!

Definitely. I'm leaning real hard towards a Manners EH1 stock. Now I just need to figure out the barrel. I'm struggling to figure out the the proper countour for this build.

6.5x47 gets my vote if your reloading.

You should also take a hard look at the .260. I built mine on a Stevens 200 action with a Shilen Select Match 1:8 barrel. With the 140gr Berger VLD's it will shoot 5-6" at 1000yd. With Lapua brass now available for the 260, it is a top shelf 6.5mm. I went with the 260 because of the availability of brass (it can be easily formed from .308, 7mm-08 etc.) and not being at the mercy of one brass maker.
