Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone had developed a 260rem for a 1in8 twist, for around the 500-1000 yard range will be used for hunting medium game and killing paper, any advice would be great cheers guys

I'd be interested in this info too. I've just built two 1903 Springfields in 260Rem with tight necks and long throats. Haven't done any load work up yet. My barrels are 1:9 twist and was thinking of using 123Amax and 120 GMX (paper and game respectively).

powders ive had the best luck with in order...

H4831sc...a little slower but extremly accurate and consistent
H4350...running a VERY close second
RL-17...very fast but not quite as accurate or consistent as the above

primers...CCI BR2s have been hands down the most consistent and produce the lowest ESs...im playing with the FED210 Ms in my new build.

brass...lapua

mudpig you say your barrel is throated long with a tight neck?? how long and how tight?

whats your loaded neck size?

ive had the best luck with .003 neck tension and a 2.030 trim length....the 4046 and 4831 groups are very respectable in your spread sheets.

I have had great success with H414, Win760, and Hybrid HV100 with the 107gr through 123gr bullets.

Mine is an AI, but the powder I keep coming back to is H4831 SC.
Tried RL17, got the speed but lost some accuracy, H4350 was good but not quite AS good.

Loaded Neck OD = .294"

Fired Neck OD= .296"

Neck Bushing usually .291" or .293"

Neck ID = .015"

.264" + 2(.015") - .002 = Theoretical Neck Bushing Size

your right in line with your neck tension...the RL-19 was accurate in my rifle but dirty...if you can try some H4831sc and i bet you can get down in the high 2s.

mudpig you say your barrel is throated long with a tight neck?? how long and how tight?[/QUOTE]

Neck is .294 and throat is .120 with a 1.5 degree lead angle. Remington brass necks only need a light cleaning up to fit, but Federal brass needs to really be turned down to fit. The 1903 long action gives me the room to seat long and take advantage of the extra powder space.

Subscribing.. I got a box of 123 Lapua Scenars I'm getting ready to start on this week with some H4350... I'm glad to see that 4064 worked well, I've got a stash of it from my 308...

I've got 8# of W760 and really hoping that is going to be the one that works best for this! Also have IMR4831, IMR4350 to try if necessary.

I use 40.5grs of IMR 4350 with Berger 130gr VLD Target going 2750fps .002 from the lands out of my stock LRP in 260. That load has been working extremely well for me.

I have had my best success for 1K shooting with H4831 140 AMAX, Winchester Brass 243 NK'd up to 260. and H4350 either AMAX or 139 Lapua using Lapua Brass, I'm going to move away from Win Brass and go to Lake City because Winchester Brass loosens up in the primers after a few firings. But it really has produced my most accurate loads with the H4831 and 140 AMAX.

how much 4831??..whats you oal?

book says min 39g max 46g...Id use H4831sc if your going to try it other wise your going to be compressed before you find a good load and velocity...not that compressed is a bad thing with slower powders it just makes seating a PITA...start about 42-43g and work up to 46g...I bet around 44.5 to 45.8g and .025 off the lands you will find a very accurate load...but if I remember right your running a criterion match barrel? so at .025 off the lands your probably going to start crunching powder at about 44gs.
I'm sure Rangers OAL is about the same as yours unless he sent dummys in to have his barrel chambered to...remember I had a criterion match barrel and it did not have .160 free bore as claimed.

a couple of other VERY accurate powers in a 260....H1000 and RL-25 you will be compressed with those two for sure and RL-19...RL-22 and norma MRP if your looking for a higher velocity as well as accuracy and you will be slightly compressed with those 3....ive found the more air space you can eliminate in the case the more consistent your loads will be.

I don't have one in a Savage but my Tikka CTR in 260 is 8 twist. Doesn't like anything but 140 grain bullets but no matter whether match or hunting it does great at any range you can shoot. H414 is your friend in the 260. I load every bullet ( Sieera mk. Sierra gk. Nosler bt. Hornady Amax. All with 42 grains of h414. Using BR-2 primers. Oal 2.810. Just my load in my rifle. I tried 3 powders before the h414. 140 smk chrono 2800 fps. Seems to be my sweet spot in speed.
