Since Boyds does not offer a wide choice for the Axis with the long Magazine, how hard or what would be needed to rework a Stock made for the short mag.to work with the long magazine?

How good are you with working with wood? Knocking out the latch plate for short magazines would be easy, but you'd need to remove wood from the back of the magazine well and inlet the bottom for the floorplate.

Unless I'm mistaken, Boyds does offer every pattern for short magazine Axises that they do for long. The only difference is that short magazines get the option of wider channels for heavy barrels. I'm sure this is because Savage only produces HB Axises in short action chamberings. If a heavy barrel model is what you're after, I think your best bet would be to get the long magazine model you want and open the barrel channel. It's tedious work, but some coarse sandpaper and the right sized backer can get it done in a few hours at most.

Does the long magazine use the same latch plate as the short one?
