Looking to buy a Savage rifle

I want to buy a Savage bolt action rifle for 100 to 300 yd shooting, I want an excellent accuracy rifle. Can you guys recommend a model and caliber for this purpose ? Kind of a bench rest rifle, but not particularly a bull barrel.

Sounds like you are using it for just kind of target shooting. I would look at a .223 for cheap loaded rounds. There is more to accuracy than just the rifle. The rifle is just the start of it and most of the Savage lineup will suit you well. The quality of ammo is also important which is why many shooters reload so they can customize their load with their rifle. The quality of the optics, base and rings have a very big impact on accuracy as well. Finally your own shooting skills. There is lots to consider here for excellent accuracy. The best unknown question I can think of is what is your budget? Then we can at least get you a recommendation at the best overall rifle package within your budget.

No offense, but inside 300 yards doesn't require much. A 223 Savage with a wide foreend stock and a nice scope will give you good results with affordable ammunition. At 300 yards, M193 will produce acceptable groups for my purposes. But there is much better ammo.

The cheapest accutrigger model in 223 that you can get, plus a Choate Tactical stock, or a B&C stock, or Boyds Varminter stock. And get an SWFA fixed 10x scope with a set of $60-80 rings and an EGW rail.

Also get a lead sled, or some sandbags. You can fill the bags with rice or airsoft bbs to stay light.

I have a 223 AR 15 thaqt groups 1" and under at 100 yds with my handloads. I am looking for a bolt rifle. I really don't want to have to change stocks etc. Just a good accurate rifle right out of the box. My Budget is around the 500.00 to 700.00 range. If I can get more than 300 yds that would be great.

Check out a Cabelas-exclusive 12FV or Dick's-exclusive 11VT. I have a 12FV and it is a nice rifle out of the box, though I am planning on upgrading the stock. The 11VT also has a pretty good reputation. They're very similar, mainly differing in that the 12 is a fixed magazine gun whereas the 11 is a detachable magazine gun packaged with a scope. I'd still go with the 12 since I tend to think the factory scope mounts are a bit cheesy, I prefer a better quality of scope, and the blind mag doesn't bother me much.

My 223 axis does well right out of the box, even with the BSA scope on it. I think I got it for $250. You can get the same in 308, if you want to go longer than 300 yards.

Your first upgrade will be better glass to get past 300 though, which will cost you your budget at a minimum.

I have no problem with my SWFA 10x scopes out to 800 yards. I haven't tried further because 308 and 223 rifles are difficult beyond that for me.

The $400 Savages are accurate, just not easy to be accurate. A heavier rifle with a wide foreend will be easier to benchrest with. That's why a couple of us have suggested an aftermarket stock. The ones with an aluminum bedding block screw on. Takes a minute.

Some have modified their rifle to feed the 6br's. Some have sent them off to have modified.

Personally I feed the 6br's one at a time. I like to be gentle with them.

what is your opinions on the Savage 110 ?

10, 11, 12, 16 etc are Short Action
110, 111, 112, 116 etc are Long Action

We're mostly shooting one or the other here.
