I had a $15 off coupon for MidwayUSA so I used it for a new stock. I ordered the Boyds' TactiCool Rifle Stock Savage 10 Short Action Blind Magazine 4.4" Screw Spacing Heavy Barrel Channel Laminated Wood Black Textured

It wasn't a direct drop in fit for the Hog Hunter. I had to do some wood trimming to fit the trigger guard properly and also trimmed where the blind mag clip sits. The blind mag was a tight fit too so I just sanded down some of the stock area where it drops in place.....The Boyds recoil pad is hardly a pad at all. So I took the pad off the Savage stock and trimmed it to fit the Boyds stock.

It's a pretty solid stock, feels a bit heavy but that's good. I'm not carrying it around as it's a bench / prone shooter.

Thanks!!...I'm not even sure what brake it is,...I found it cheap at a gun show. It does the job reducing recoil so I'm fine with it being a mystery brand.

I ended up putting a elastic cartridge holder with some pipe insulation for the height to give me a better cheek rest

^^^ I like that idea.

BTW, awhile ago I was running thru Walmart looking for some packing material like foam peanuts or Styrofoam. It was all so expensive! Then I spotted "Swimming Noodles". $.99 / piece. I bought a bunch of them and use them all the time now (cut them up/to shape) for stuffing things into boxes or cheek rests, etc. Works great for all kinds of things.

Looks great! I have a .243 Axis that I need to drop into their "pro varmint" one of these days.

ah yes, "Pro Varmint".....Midway still has it listed as TactiCool which is where I ordered it from.....either or, still a decent stock

Whatever they call it, it seems like a massive value. I like their stocks a lot in general, and for getting into an ergonomic bench/prone stock that doesn't cost over $3, $4, $500+, the TactiVarmint seems like a great option.

I love my one and only (so far) Boyd's stock, (on my .308 Axis) but you're right... their "recoil pad" doesn't tame recoil... at all. My Axis hits the shoulder like a Mosin carbine. Recoil pad upgrade needed.

My axis HB .308 has the pro varmint with their recoil pad and I have to agree it does little to cushion the recoil, but at least it's not as bad as my 110 flatback in 7mm Rem Mag. It's recoil pad is thinner and stiff, thankfully I got a good deal on a boyds pro varmint that was a rapid fire closeout it's coming with the pachmayr 1 inch recoil pad.

well I got the chance to take it out today for some first time reload testing. The Boyds stock felt good. Not sure how big of a difference it made on group shots compared to the factory stock. I was shooting pretty accurate right out of the box when I got the rifle.

With factory stock using Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr
