When I bought my new Savage it was listed as a 112 BVSS 6.5 x .284 Norma. Now that I have it in my hands it is a Model 12 BVSS 6.5 x .284 Norma. I thought all Model 12 were short action and the Model 112 long action. So which do I have short or long action?

if it's indeed a 12 it is a short action.

Well, I checked the Model # on the box. It says Model 112 BVSS, the serial # on the receiver matches the serial # on the box. The barrel says Model 12. I measured the action screw holes and they are 5.052" apart. So I guess that makes it a long action. This is the second Savage I have ever bought. I had to be sure so I could order the scope base.

It is indeed a long action. Savage never made a 6.5-284 on a long action in a large production run, only short actions. That is the reason the barrel is roll stamped "Model 12 cal. 6.5-284 Norma". It is because that is the only roll stamp they have that is the correct caliber.
I have received several Model 12 BVSS's from the custom shop in .260 Rem, and they were roll stamped Model 10's. That is because that the only rifles they made in .260 Rem. were Model 10's.

Sharpshooter thanks for the info. I figured that these rifles were a short production run. The model 12 had me going for a while.
