Whenever I've seen range finders for golfers, it seems that they are much cheaper than those sold for gun sports. Anybody else notice anything about this? Are the golf units that much different? Steve

Unless you're Waaayyyy out in the rough, golfers seldom have to range a far as shooters.

I first bought a Nikon 550 and was disappointed that it would rarely reach the stated 550 yards, and even then, 550 yards wasn't really enough range. I traded it for a Bushnell 1500 and I'm glad I did. It never has problems ranging out to over 1000 yards. Lesson learned: make sure you are buying a unit with enough range. I would look for something that will go 1000+ yards.

I went right for the leica 1200 rangefinder. I can pick up ranges on groundhog size critters at 800 plus yards with no problem.
