I'll be in Colorado for a few days at the end of August (Colorado Springs down to Trinidad), being from Pennsylvania, I'd really like to take the opportunity to do a little prairie dog hunting.

Sounds like talking to a land owner to help control the population is the best way but, that probably not very practical given the situation.

My second idea is to look at public lands. Any guidance or tips on the best way to squeeze in a day of hunting would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You might want to call the department of conservation and ask if you will require a small game permit and it may make a difference depending on if you are shooting on public or private property. Colorado can be a pain that way. The way I read it anyone can shoot private property for pdogs (small game code #327) with landowner permission.

You ned to know that black tailed prairie dogs are protected in Colorado.

They were a few years ago but that changed around 2006. If you look at current small game regulations you'll find they are listed with seasons for public and private land.

The farthest south I go is limon wich is a ways east of the springs, I do 90 percent of my shooting within an hour of Greeley. I am sure you will find someplace though, we sure seem to have a bumper crop this year.
