I recently bought a Stevens 200 in .308. I am considering converting it to .223. What are the opinions of the Axis heavy barrels? I see them for sale occasionally for a good price and wonder if it is worth it or should I look for another pre-fit barrel?

My personal preference is for the Stevens action you already have so I would go to the McGowen website and get one of their prefit kits. A heavy McGowen barrel in .223 on your Stevens action is going to be a taco driver.

I know the Axis is extremely accurate too but it's just not my cup of tea.

Good luck!

That was supposed to be tack driver!

Thanks for clearing that up. Just kidding, I know how frustrating autocorrect can be. This is really kind of a budget build and I have seen those listed for good prices.

i have an axis hb in .308win and i have no complaints about the barrel. i wouldn't hesitate to get the same rifle in .223 if i wanted that cartridge. actually, i just kept the barrel and action and restocked it, then added on more good stuff. it's a 300 yard killing machine. :)

the axis hb .223 is cheap enuf to just order one out new. rockite the stock, do the trigger spring thing, add some glass, build some good rounds, shoot 'em up.

I would consider that if I had not just bought a Stevens 200 to start a build.

I feel your pain! My Axis just wants to shoot everything thru almost the same hole! The stevens is now under condsideration to become a 22-250, only because i have most of the parts. Keep watching the classified, good stuff goes thru there.
