What am I missing? It seems like there are AI versions of just about everything out there except the 308 Win. Seems like it would bump it closer to 30-06 performance in a short action with better brass life. Just thinking out loud.

I've wondered the same thing? Maybe the results are, or would be, similar to the 30-06 AI resulting in not much gain.

Extended brass life would be a plus though. I have a 308 barrel,if someone would like to Ackley-ize it for me let me know. I'd be sure to give a review of my findings.

The reality is the 308 already HAS the same performance as the 30-06. Unless you get to the super heavies, in which case the seating depth is the larger issue. P.O. typically only AI'd stuff (that people know about) things that gained large steps.

Did I just read .308=30-06 Again???
LOL Please, It's just like drag racing. With all else being equal, there is never a substitute for displacement :)

I have a 30-06 AI. I got it for kicks when I re-barreled my '06. It makes a fun conversation piece. The rifle shoots is quite accurate. Basically you gain about 100 fps in velocity. I guess that is not much, but for me it means that I can shoot a 180 gr bullet in the mid 2800's which is about the same as my 7mm-08. This way I can use the same sight picture regardless of the rifle. I also have some loads for a 200 gr Nosler Accubond that supposed have a velocity of about 2730. I hope to use this for wild cows.

Yep. THIS. Really darkker did you think no one would notice?

The reality is the .308 case gains very little when improving. I am not one to knock improving cases I love improved cases but in the case of the .30 cal there are very few if any shooters looking for something between the .308 and .30-06. Most shooters if wanting more performance jump straight to a magnum chambering in that caliber. The nice thing about the .308 improved is that it would be a very efficient performer and have excellent brass life. Plus it would look really cool just like the rest of the ackley cases.

Then you should know just like drag racing, 50 psi worth of boost ALWAYS substitutes displacement. Both Funny Car and Pro Stock run 500 CID engines, but no where near the same performance numbers.

IF, and I'm not claiming everyone does; IF you keep the same pressures, any velocity gain is minor enough under the 175-180gr class as to be insignificant to the notion of "Hot rodding" a cartridge. Get heavier bullets and I fully concede that the displacement of the 30-06 will win. But as Stomp pointed out, that is when most would take a real step-up in performance and go the magnum route.

Getting too old for magnums. Not really looking for a lot of velocity gain but love my 308.
