Action block idea

I've got a few barreled actions I'm wanting to get pre fits for. I have a barrel nut wrench but no barrel vise. Since the barrels are different diameters I thought about making a action vise with a piece of 4x4. I would cut the 4x4 down to size, then drill a hole (smaller than action diameter) through the 4x4. I would then screw one of my headless bedding screws into the front hole of the receiver. Then drill a hole for the headless screw to set down in the 4x4 which would keep if from turning when clamped down. Is there any reason for using the blocks on the barrel instead of the action?

I saw an article where a guy built something like what your talking about. He said it worked only with actions that had the barrel removed once before. I guessing that if you added some metal here and there it might hold up to some of Mongo's work at the factory.

I saw this thread this morning and it got me thinking that $60 was pretty steep for two pieces of strap and a 2x4 so I built this one in about an hour. I got everything from the scrap bin so it cost me $0. I used a couple of "v" blocks I made from oak and trust me, it works. I just smashed them in in a vice with no resin or anything. I'm not saying the "correct" tools wouldn't be nice, but I sometimes think those of us with money think it makes more since to buy things when in reality, it really is more economical and self satisfactory to do it yourself given you have the patience and skills to learn how.

Only reason I bring it up is far too often I get told to let somebody else do it when I can do things just as well such as rebuilding engines for our tractors. I mean John Deere wants 20 k to put an engine in and I can do it for 7k and have a better job since I take pride in the work. All I'm saying is don't be discouraged and look at some ideas and make your own if you want. V blocks aren't that great but do work but something like mcnamara would work good if you drill out to a bit under sized and then sand it so that the action or barrel starts to fit, but not all the way. This allows it to wedge when you clamp it. Make sure you are using a hard wood. Soft woods will give you a head ache.

Either that or over bore it and place a strip of cork in it which will smash and conform. Usually works best to also inlet a place for the recoil lug to fit into which gives a solid contact point on top of all the friction. Good luck!

I ended up using a 4x4 post that I had laying around. I drilled a 1 3/8 hole in it with a Forstner bit. Clamped it around the action in a vise with no rosin and it worked fine. Rebarreled 2 guns already. Cost 0 results 100%
