Not a Savage but techniques for all you gun painters out there.


Just putting this out there for anyone who may be interested. Picked up a 24" fluted barrel from Brownels and had to paint it. Check of the inter web revealed the ball bearing/marble method of taping it off. Basically, wrap the barrel with standard masking tape then slide your marble up down the flute until it cuts the tape. Pull the tape off and paint. I also color filled the lettering with spray paint then wiped it off with a rag sprayed with carb cleaner. Base coat used was KG flat dark earth and other are just regular spray paint. The gun will be completely painted in Arid Flectarn camo. Pics to follow.

Thanks for the tip on painting the flutes. I have one I've been wanting to do and never got around to it.
Now that I know how it's done I think I may get to it in the next couple of weeks.

I figured people were wondering about this as I was. Took a bit of Internet searching to find this method. But, it works and should work on fluted bolts too. Haven't tried it yet though.

Ive had a few barrels fluted by a local smith and even a few Savages refluted.
He just paints the whole barrel then cleans off the excess while its chucked
in his lathe.

Nice! That's a looooonnnnng AR! I like it. I was thinking of doing something similar with a 6.5 Grendel.

Looking forward to seeing what kind of groups and velocities you get out of that barrel. I assume this is a .223. Twist rate? What is your go-to prairie dog bullet/load?

I'm working up some 55gr VMaxs for my 18" heavy profile 1:8 AR. It's my first time reloading with an emphasis on high velocity. I was considering trying the 50gr bullets but the 55s were on hand locally so I thought I'd give those a shot.

Nicely done on the camo! A little too much white for my taste but I can see where it'd be perfect in spotty snow - and now I noted your username so I assume you like to get out in it! Nice rifle.

The barrel is a Brownells 12 twist. My favorite 223 load is a 50gr Zmax with 2230. But, 2230 has been more difficult to find than Bigfoot. I want to try so CFE in it. This gun with scope weighs 9.25lbs. My other one with a 20" bull weighs 11.5. I really like the feel of this one with the super slim handguard. I really just wanted to build one like a bushmaster 24" I saw in a shop and when I found this Brownells barrel it was time to put it together. Did this build for around 550 compared to the 1,200 for the bushmaster. Still need to shoot it. The white looks harsh in these pictures, but it is really almond a bit more tan than perceived in the picture.

You can also purchase stick paint that you rub into the letters, let dry and then wipe off the excess with mineral spirits.
