I might be wrong, but I believe I read/heard somewhere that the vast majority of the Medal of Honor recipients are awarded them posthumously. The qualifying act requires such extreme valor and self sacrifice that nearly no one actually survives whatever it is they do to earn the honor.

Better do search and find out lot of them awarded for Bravery and still serving.

Sort of 3468 have been awarded of those 621 have been awarded posthumous. as of May of 2015. I just typed out a really long opinion but decided it is better keep it simple facts.
