I have 2 Savage 99's. One is a 1963 99F with tang mounted safety, the other is a 1970 99E with a lever safety. My concern is this, on the 99E when closing the lever and holding trigger back the trigger will not engage, but, on the 99F while doing the same thing the trigger will engage and if I am too forceful the firearm will fire. Is this a defect on the 99F or were some manufactured this way? My last experience with the 99 was over 40 years ago and that one safely disengaged. I do not know what model I had then.

If I understand you correctly, I believe you are trying to "decock" the rifles? The later model E, with the lever safety, will allow you to decock it in that fashion ( as would all the premil, pre tang safety models) while the tang safety model won't. If you are concerned about tension weakening the firing pin spring, my understanding of springs is that using them, or compressing and releasing pressure on them, is what weakens them, not staying compressed. Someone else may have a different thought on it, however. Regards 0021

That makes me feel somewhat better as I thought that I may have a defective firearm. Thank you very much for your input.

I prefer to decock my guns esp thru the winter when they don't get used. I don't know if my 99 will decock when pulling trigger and closing action. My 22s, bolt CFs will.

Just buy an AZoom snap cap in the right caliber, and you can decock it that way.

Tight groups.

Only the lever safety 99's can be slip closed to release the firing pin spring in a nice way, the tang safety models will cock and then fire. Pretty much every one of the pre-mil 99's and the E's can be slip closed, anything above 1,000,000 cannot be.

Just to be difficult, I have two tang safety 99's that slip close and de-cock. One is a .375, one a early post mil cut checkered .243 99F. I have heard of others.
