Model 10 replacement barrel for target shooting 1000 yards. What's a good barrel/bad one? Length? Twist?

10-12 twists rates are widely used. 10 is very popular. I like 11.25 personally. It really depends somewhat on your projectile.

I would not worry about buying the best barrel, just get a quality makers barrel chambered for the bullets your going to use. Many of the prefits are good enough to get started. If you lucky you could get Apache to cut you a match chamber out of an X-caliber barrel. Talk to Scope eye.

Learn the craft then decide if you want a high end barrel. The 308 does not have the boiler room for great long range accuracy and the projectiles that have the BC. But, there is plenty of info and shooters out there doing it because of the Military and the F/TR matches.

There are a couple of forums that are tailored to the education of long range shooting

I shoot lapua brass with 44.5grs of varget with a 168gr nosler match projectile. My drawback right now is my scope. Getting a vortex pst soon. But I know a barrel will be soon.

I use criterion 308 28" bull barrel- 1/10 twist. Shoot 178 Amax to 1100 with good accuracy. I've since moved to a 260 and the 308 sits in the cabinet.

In the 308 a longer barrel will usually serve you better Due to the gained velocity.

So you are already getting into it. I would try to get in on Apache's next run or talk to Dennis, Scope eye or Jim at Northland Shooters Supply. Jim may have what you need right now. I like to throat for the projectile to get the most out of a caliber.

I just installed a Shaw .308 barrel and hogged out the stock. Not finished yet, haven't shot it. We'll see soon enough. The Shaw barrel looks to be good quality and has a good rep for the money you spend.

i'll post results here when I have them.
