Hello all! New Savage shooter here. Participated in my first 3X600 shoot a couple of weeks ago, and have to admit I'm now an addict.

Got into Savage rifles and the long range shooting by accident. Bought a Savage 11 in .223 Remington a few years ago in the attempt to get my daughter interested in whitetail hunting with me. No such luck, and the rifle sat in the back of my safe until I began looking for a new rifle to take on a western hunt. On the advice of my gunsmith, I began researching Savage rifles, then remembered my daughter's rifle. After shooting a few dozen rounds through it, I found out how accurate the little rifle could shoot. With that, I bought a Savage 16 Bear Hunter in 300WSM.

As for the .223, after some load development, I found the "sweet" dose this week. (See the attach picture - a 0.378" group at 100 meters) I'll post a question concerning a new barrel in the appropriate location, as I'm now interested in replacing the pencil barrel with a more suitable target/varmint tube.

Welcome neighbor.
We all love to tinker and that's a ton of fun but in my opinion there is nothing wrong with sporter weight barrels.
Outshooting more expensive rigs with some handloads and a factory Savage hunting rifle is a sport in itself.
I think in drag racing they call it fishing :)
