I have a Savage Model 11 in .223 with a 8-32x50 scope that I use for target shooting. I have the scope mounted on low rings and the bell is VERY close to the top of the barrel. I measure it to be less than 0.175 inches, and when I put the front cup of the scope cover on it just grazes the top of the barrel at the lip. I know it is ideal to mount the scope as low as possible, but is this too close?

Trim some from the scope cap.

Trim some from the scope cap.

+1

The gap need not be big, but I wouldn't want the bell of the scope to touch the barrel, period.

I think my description might have been confusing. The scope itself does not touch the barrel...hopefully I can upload a couple of pictures

Yes, "grazes" implies that it actually touches.

That looks fine to me — you can clearly see daylight between them.
