I purchased a Savage 16/116 30;06 SS hUNTER XP COMBO, THE BASE UNDER THE FRONT RING EXTENDS OUT INTO THE CHAMBER AREA, NOTHING BUT AIR UNDER MOST OF THE BASE. wILL THIS MOUNTING BE SECURE, i FEEL IT WILL NOT STAY, i called Savage, they say its fine?

How many screws are holding the front base in place? Can you post any pics? If you cant live with it you could always swap it out for a one piece base.

if it looks like this one, that's the way they come and it works. i would replace it with a one piece base myself.

It's called an extended base and is designed to be that way to allow the mounting of today's shorter scopes on long-action rifles. Nothing to worry about there, they're just as solid and secure as they use the same two screws to attach to the front bridge of the action as any other front base.

If concerned, just replace bases with steel for increased rigidity (factory would be Al??)
Not that the standard bases would necessarily be inadequate....
