For what its worth lots of us had shims under the rear of the scope bases for years.
Reason being even in the mid/late 80s there were no tapered bases unless somebody made their own.
So use your own judgment on how quickly you replace the base.
Forget the ring spacing, just add a shim and go shoot.

Shim installed. I only did one for the first attempt, so hopefully that will get the job done. If the shim thickness is in the neighborhood of what I researched online, it will be just about spot on, hopefully a little low so I can dial it. If not, I'll just throw another one under it and go from there.
