Scooter,
I know. I laughed over and over. It's like he knew the camera was there and posed for it.

George Patten was always one of my favorite people. We could really use him now.

California's central coast. Big country with lots of wild pigs. Heading back down there in just over a month.

That would be a place one could set up to glass and shoot from. Are there deer there also?

Glassing is the name of the game. Not always long shots but frequently shooting over canyons. 150-200 yard shots are the norm unless you want to push it further.

Yes, there are deer. Coastal Blacktail deer.

Well, with a place like that why not push it further?
Its been proven the world isnt flat, what else is possible?
The keys are already in the thing, how much fun would it be to find out? lol

I do a lot of hunting at my uncle's farm, and shoot 1000 yards to the gravel pit seen in the back ground. The fields give away to a massive wooded ravine all the way around the property.

This is looking the other way down the power lines across the ravine is about 1 mile.

If you were to set up on the power line at the first set of poles in the picture or thereabout, how far left and right of the power line across the
valley could you see? And what would be the distances? How about from the oposite side looking back?

4,000 Yards is maximum possible from far side all the way across my uncle's fields. It is all woods down in the ravine at the second set of poles.

I didn't know it was that far but there is a neat site I found called Map Measure,, you zoom down to your area and turn it on satalite, set it on yards and click on point A then point B and it will tell you the distance.

Forget the 4000 yds Dan, point is can you set up on that power line from either side, and have shooting across that ravine?
Are there other hunters using that area that could move deer for you? Ive never been there and im excited over it.
Power lines just like that are where we spend much of our time. And we do that for one reason. Spend some time there this winter
and see what goes on there. Pay attention to the sun as to which side is better in the am or pm. Best its shining on it and not on an angle to it or you be looking toward it.

I don't mess around much at the power lines,,,, My parents house is 1200 yards to the right of the gravel pit and I could shoot off there roof top all the way back to the fields.

I am an agent to use Deer Damage permits on my uncles farm and we usually get 10 or more doe only, last year we got them on early July. I am only comfortable shooting at the deer at 5-600 yards. I don't have enough gun yet to,, but I gotta tell ya a 178 gr Amax wistling out of my Shilen Select match .308 barrel will knock them HARD at 500 yards. There is tons of deer that come out in these fields! Last summer I had ranged a deer at 500 yards got set up and shot,, I had the deer back in the scope before the bullet hit her and the deer just rolled over forward. Lots of coyotes too, and I'm letting the woodchucks regenerate too!

sorry about my spelling, I'm sure it's close enough to understand.LOL

I understood perfectly, and didnt even think or care to do a spell check.
One thing to consider, shooting at sidehills is like shooting at a picture hanging on a wall.
Easy to see the hits and easy to correct misses. Not always as easy on flat terrain.
Tree branches can be an issue, offset by sending more lead. Those deer use those fields, but they dont live there.

You are right yobuck,, I bet the deer may bed down on the far or near side of power lines and I could find them using binoculars and shoot them right were they lay! What do you think of a 30 06 AI? I don't really want to get into Magnum territory.

A shooter like you could make it work well for at least 308 distances. Id have locations established along that valley from both sides.
Chances are shots would average 500 or less on average from what im seeing. Kid stuff for you and could even be kid stuff for kids.
There are no doubt other places also that you arent tuned into because your already successful. Work on a chart for the gun and go shoot it.
Where a small tree touches the ground is a good aiming point if nothing else is available. Scout out the area now while the leaves are down.
