All,

I have a .308 heavy barreled Axis in .308. The barrel has a target crown like this:

The .308 packs a wallop. I have been very happy with brakes on other rifles, but those came with threaded barrels. Should I have a smith thread the barrel for a brake? If so, which smith and brake do you recommend?

TIA

Have it threaded 5/8-24. The crown will still be fine. I like Ross Schuler brakes a lot....great price and a very good brake. If you go with one of his brakes, it is best to get the brake first because the gunsmith will have to time-thread your barrel so the ports will align correctly.

It's a little pricier, but I like the APA Gen II little *******. Once your barrel is threaded you can install and time it yourself in about 5 min or less.

Mark the top of the barrel. Take it off and send it to Ross Schuler. He will thread, install, blend, and time your brake for cheaper than the APA.

+1 for Ross again, but the APA would be fine as well.
