I had good luck with ultra max ammo. In 223 and 308
the 223 was 40gr bal tips and shot in the .6"-.7" range

I think Black Hills has the best you can buy. My 223 Weatherby shoots it about .5".

How bad is tula fer plinkin? It's half the price of other stuff. Like $.21 per round.

You may want to check out this web page (http://www.cabelas.com/p-0076323217275a.shtml) concerning Tula ammo.

I've got a whole box of different types of .223 I've been trying in my Savage. None of it has really stood out so far except for Wolf which really stinks. I have some Black Hills ammo and it has a very good reputation but the only difference I saw between it and some PMC was that it dropped a few inches less at 400 yards. Both were consistently accurate. I've also shot Remington Premier Match which was very good but not really much better than the other stuff I was shooting and therefore not worth the extra money IMO. I've shot Remington UMC which seemed just as good really. Maybe the best I've shot is American Eagle 5.56.

I guess I haven't really figured out which is the best yet but most of it seems to work very well in my Model 12 LRPV. I had no trouble shooting sub-MOA at 100 yards or hitting a gallon jug at 400 yards. I know others can shoot much better than that but I've only had this rifle a month or so and I really haven't worked out the details on getting it dialed in yet. The main thing I've learned is don't expect Wolf to work as well as other ammo.

I just sent a letter and target off to savage thanking them for a excellent 10 in .223 that shot a four shot group of 0.475 edge to edge using Hornady Varmit express 55 gr. bullets. at 200 yards off of a rest. Got a letter back from them saying they may post the letter and target on their web site. So my vote has to be Hornady Varmit Express.... now if I could only come close to that group with a handload (got my work cut out for me)

Seems to me like ammo that's a bit dirty wouldn't be much of an issue with a bolt gun vs. Semi Auto? I want to shoot a lot at first for fun and to get the hang of things, and tula is half the $ of others.

Thanks for the input all, sorry I didn't pay attention and put it in the wrong place. You'd think I was a newb to forums too....

My fcp-k in .223 REALLY likes Buffalo bore sniper 69g match ammo.

I wasn't trying to sway you one way or another. I just pointed out the page because it had several reviews of the Tula. The only way to know for sure how it works in your gun is to try it.

BTW I've seen ammo gum up a bolt action so bad the bolt wouldn't work and it only took about 200 rounds of rimfire ammo to do it. But that was Remington Golden Bullets. You won't find much ammo that dirty IMO. Usually though you're right that dirty ammo won't affect a bolt action like it will a semi-auto.

I have a short barrel Stevens 200. Best off the shelf ammo for me has been Winchester white box with groups just a little over
1 inch at 100 yds. I've tried Black Hills, Hornady, Remington, and Fiochi and haven't gotten as good of groups.

My 12FV really likes the .223 Partizan (SP?) Match 75 grain. It's not that expensive and both my AR and my Savage Bolt think its WONDERFUL. Just my 2 cents. rc

what twist rate do you guys have?

i have a 12fv with a 1in9. i have corbon match prvi and black hills (all 69gr) that i plan on trying. sounds like i may need to throw in PMC and TAP training from my AR stash into the mix.
