Today, the Boyd's Stock/CDI Bottom Metal arrived, and thought I would take a few quick pictures.

Haven't had an opportunity to fool with it to much, but here are few early observations.

It was shipped and packaged well and communications with CDI was top notch. Pam and Jeff stayed in touch throughout the process and answered any questions that I had. From what I can tell so far the inletting was excellent!! Both of the action screw inserts in the Boyd's stock were removed. (Pics to come). The bottom metal itself is quite a bit smaller than the standard Savage bottom metal, but bedside's that looks to be exactly the same black anodized aluminum.

The MDTTAC Mag needs to be "rocked in" like the standard Axis DBM's from front to back. Loading ammo went smoothly, however when I locked the magazine in it sat about 1/4 inch to high and the bolt head would hit the feed lips and you were not able to load a round. If you pulled down on the magazine just a little it would drop and then the bolt was able to pick one up. Did this 5-6 times and it occurred repeatedly, not sure if this is an issue with the mag, bottom metal or inletting, but will try and figure it out. Once it got going it cycled the rounds without issue.

More to come, over the weekend.

Looks good Rosco. I hope mine comes in soon. I appreciate the pics of it out of the stock, as I was wondering how they managed it. Did CDI include schematics/drawings for the pillars? They did for my Model 11, and I hope they do for this, it was extremely nice to have the dimensions for the pillars already figured. In fact it may help with your feeding issues if there isn't sufficient clearance. (AND post more pics!!!)

Blue Dog,

I will check again but didn't see any drawings included and yes pillars may help.

Here is a short action 4.4 CDI Bottom Metal right beside it the Axis, as you can see no trigger guard. I must admit one the first things I thought about was that the plastic axis trigger needed to go and replaced with a Boyd's Stainless Steel one.

Top View, you can see here the rear action screw insert that comes in the stock has been removed. I actually liked that because it seemed to help with the integrity of the stock in that back area where so may cracks seems to occur.

Thanks again Rosco! My Boyd's still has the cheapo plastic trigger guard, once I get my stock back a metal one will probably be my next purchase.

Thanks guys!! I had a Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x with the V-Plex reticule that I had got on sale at Cabela's about 4 months ago, and an old EGW 0 MOA rail, so went ahead and mounted. All I had were a few Game Reapers and some 30mm Tactical Weaver Low rings and neither really let me place the scope for proper eye relief but I wanted to take it to the range in the morning so the Weavers got the call. Later on will end up swapping out for some mediums.

Roscoe, that looks amazing. Please let us know how it functions!

Is that a heavy barrel axis?

I see you went with the green Boyd's. I was considering the same. Do you like it?

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks man, and no it is not a Heavy barrel Axis. This is the rifle breakdown

Standard Axis Action
26'' Barrel .308 1:10 Twist (take off from a Savage 12 I just bought)
Boyd's Pro Varmint in funky green.
EGW Rail 0 MOA
Weaver Low 30mm Tactical Rings
Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x V-Plex
Factory Trigger and Guard
Triad Tactical Multi-Cam Cheek Rest
CDI Bottom Metal with 10 Round MDTTAC Mag.
Harris BRMS Bi-pod with Bipod Loc.

The stock is great, I can't complain at all. The green looked better on the webpage then it does in person, at least to me, I am going to have to Camo-dip or paint it in some way shape or form. The bottom metal and magazine were awesome, now to be fair I have only taken it out once for any real range time, but for now there was only that one issue where if you loaded the mag hard the feed lip would block the bolt from picking up a round. I called Pam and Jeff this morning to ask if that was done purposely, Pam called back and said Jeff would give me a ring here in a few days. Also, had a question about the removal of the metal rear action screw thingy and if that would effect action seating and/or lessen the integrity of the stock.

If it did, I couldn't tell, put 20 rounds of FGMM down the tube, got sighted in, and was easily shooting just a tad over MOA.

Hi guys, this one came out nice, I did ours here with a Boyds Thumbhole stock.

The MDT mags have a sharp feed lip at the rear and we just bevel it off so the bolt will push the mag down when loading a new mag. The AI mags have a little different design and isn't an issue, the DBM needs to be compatible with both, so the MDT moves a little more than the AI does. Heres pic of the trim mod that makes it all good

Is there a particular reason why CDi doesn't make this in a long action format? MDT makes a 300WM magazine. Is there something with spacing of the action screws?

I suspect the rear screw is where the release would have to be for a long action magazine. It doesn't look like Rosco's stock was milled at all along the front edge of the magazine well. That may mean the bottom metal is as far forward as it can go, and we can see the magazine release is about as close to the rear screw as it can get.

I figure I will ask in here as CDI has chimed in also.

I also have a Axis II in .308 that I have put a bull barrel on with a Boyds Pro Varmit. I want to bed the action and add pillars. I assume I should wait to do that after having CDI do their thing? I would have to save up some for the CDI and am itching to do more upgrades so I don't want to jump the gun.

That Funky Green is growing on me - Was this a Boyd's color or did you do it yourself? I think it goes well with the matte black of the rifle. Nice selection of parts and great build. Folks doing some nice builds lately. LongRange's build comes to mind.

@Spectre

The green was a color that Boyd's offered and thanks for the compliment, and she doesn't shoot to bad either, and the bottom metal is outstanding.

You can get CDI to pillar bed your rifle if you don't have alot of time to fool with your guns(Like me!!). Or if you would rather do the work yourself then yes wait till after CDI has inletted and installed the bottom metal.

I hate to bump an old thread, but I'll start a new thread if I get no response. I'm wondering if there is any updates from the guys who have done this bottom metal thing. How is it working out? I'm finally to the point where I can send off mine to have it done, and was looking for any recent thoughts on the system. Are the MDT mags working out? Has anyone tried this with the AI mags?

MDT mags have been working well with my CDI bottom metal and Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor ammo. Rosco loaned me his what I think was an AI magazine and it worked fine as well. The only problem I've encountered has been when the mag gets seated too far when the bolt is back all the way. It will stop the bolt until it's seated properly.
