I have what I think is a Savage model 99, its serial number range puts it at 1924. On the top of the barrel band it is marked Savage 1899 Model? Is this a model 1899 or 99? It also is a takedown model but the barrel has no serial number on it is this normal, all the other serial numbers match on the gun. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Savage marked the 1899 well into the '20's with 'Model 1899', then started about 1926 (?) marking them '99'. Barrels were never marked with the serial number. Sounds like you might have a Model F. But, I have seen rifles as late as 1927-8 marked as 1899... as they used up old, previously made receivers. Lee Davis

Thank you for the info. I thought that savage did serial number the barrels on takedown rifles? My rifle also has a pistol grip making it a 99-G? Not sure I can not find any markings. The rifle is from 1924 in 300 save 24inch barrel-takedown has an integral front sight and has pistol grip. Any more info would be appreciated. Also what should the rear sight be? Thanks
