View Full Version : Savage 110 ?

A friend showed me his model 110 (30-06). It has the plain stock with no checkering,has open sights with a 18" barrel also the lop is 13". Is the 18" barrel rare. I cannot find any info on it. Serial no. is 418xx. Thanks

With a five digit serial number and no letter in front of it, that is an early 110 and will be difficult to find information on it. Are the sights dovetailed into the barrel? Wish I could tell you more. Have seen some mention of the early ones on this forum, so keep searching. Looked at one in a gun shop recently. Very nice rifles, but not interchangeable with the newer models.

After more searching it is a 20" barrel with overall length of 40.5" . The rear sight is buckhorn style (dovetailed in the barrel.Front sight is Williams style ramp sight with gold bead,mounted with two screws.

That appears to be well preserved....

I'll take a guess at manufacture date - 1968

Barrel has been cut down from 22" at some point as Savage only offered two barrel lengths back in the early 60's, 22" for standard cartridges and 24" for magnums. As for the D.O.M. it's likely 1964 with a very slight chance of being an early 1965.

Well I'll be d@mned - for once the BBoGV is right. Just rechecked my original catalogs and sure enough, for the first 4 years the Model 110E had a 20" barrel for standard cartridges. Everything else Savage made 110-wise in that timeframe came with 22 and 24" barrels. Guess the money they saved on that 2-inches of barrel is what made it the Economy model.

That's twice in two days I've gotten one wrong, might be time to up my dosage of Ginkgo Biloba.

The 1966 version began at 100,000 to avoid problems with parts orders. On December 16, 1968 a new system was started and the first gun was #A001001. All the various rifles and shotguns were numbered sequentially as finished without regard to what they were.
If the serial numbers started at 100,000 in 1966, it had to be built later than that.....

The serial number on this Savage is 418xx. No letter in front of number.

Last I checked 41,8XX was lower than 100,000.

Joe dated a Model 110L S/N 35XXX to 1963, and another 110L S/N 57XXX to 1965. Given that 418XX falls between those two it's a pretty fair guess that this one was made in 1964 or possibly early 65.
