Cabela's has a great deal on Savage Model 12FV top bolt release rifles. I currently have a .260 and was hoping to build something larger for even longer shots out to about 1760 yds. The 12 FV is a short action so I am thinking that kind of limits me on what I can do. I was thinking the 300 WSM would be a good choice. However, I since learned that most short magnum's are large shank barrels and the 12 FV action is a small shank action.

Shillen makes a small shank 300 WSM barrel. Curious to know people's thoughts on using a small shank short magnum barrel. Most manufacturers don't make small shank barrels and I am wondering if that is for a reason, is this a safety concern?

I'm open to looking at other short action calibers that are capable of reaching a mile...

You'll be fine building on a small shank action. Savage increased the shank size on the WSM's to alleviate any issues there may have been with cases sticking in the chambers. It was said that the chamber walls would expand enough to allow the cases to expand more than maximum and when the chamber walls returned to their normal size, the brass was hard to extract. I've got a couple of small shank WSM's that are fed a steady diet of near max loads and haven't had any issues with extraction.
Primer pockets are a different story, however, and I've found a fix for that.

Tell me what's different about a Remington chambered for a WSM?
Same shank diameter, same action diameter......
