I'm installing my new barrel that I received from X-Caliber barrels in 6.5mm CM with a medium palma contour. I put the barrel into the vise, screw on the standard barrel nut all the way until it wont turn anymore. Then I slide on the recoil lug and begin to screw in the action. Once I get the action on a few turns I put in the bolt and slide in the go gauge. I continue turning and turning and turning and then I get to the recoil lug and it hasn't stopped. What stopped me is the fact there aren't any more threads left. This is my first custom savage build so I'm basically a noob besides reading a ton and watching videos. What can I do?

With the go gauge in place is your bolt handle up or down when you are turning the action?

The bolt should be closed then you'll make adjustments from there

Bolt is closed with the go gauge in.

you may have to trim the nut or send back the barrel.

remove the nut and see how far to hit the gauge, use a marker to mark the end of the receiver and see how much is left for the nut.

is it properly chambered? have you dropped the gauge into the barrel and see how far its sticking out? did they chamber it too deeply maybe?

Is the bolt head for short action?
I believe there's a slight difference in length with LA being longer.

I can take pictures it looks like it is chambered right. I'll have to mark it to see just how off it is.

Here's a picture of the go gauge in the barrel and the gap between fully screwed on action with go guage and the barrel nut lock with no recoil lug. The gap is a little over .17 inches.

Did you change your bolt head? The 7mm Mag has a .532 bolt face, you need a .473 Long Action bolt head.

Yes I swapped it with a .473 long action bolt head from PTG

Why no recoil lug?

I have a recoil lug, but when putting on the recoil lug the action does not get tight enough. When the barrel lock nut is fully "tightened / loosened" how ever you want to look at it and the action is fully tightened with bolt closed and go gauge there is only a .17 inch gap that my recoil lug doesn't fit into.

the factory lug in narrower. your using an aftermarket I assume? a factory lug may have fit. I would shave the nut myself. your lug is probably .25 inches so you'll have to save .07 at least off it. best to shave the front or look for a different nut that isn't so wide. I think the smooth nuts may be shorter??

Make sure you have approximately 1.6" of threads on the new barrel. Also, put the barrel nut on backwards and screw it on as far as it will go to prove that you're able to use all of the threads on the barrel. You may have a bad spot you're not getting past when screwing the nut on.

Looks like new barrel is about 1.4" of threads. Lock nut does use all the threads it's not getting hung up. Can I trim .3" off the locking nut maybe? Or should I send it back and ask to have the threads extended to 1.6"?

I'd give them an opportunity to make it right, mainly because it you don't, and something else ends up being wrong with it, you're on your own because you've altered it.

Spoke to the manuf. They apparently had a few barrels that came out 1.4" and aren't sure what happened and were very apologetic. Sent a fedex return label and are going to take care of it.
