6.5 Gendel In a Savage Short Action

I'm thinking about building a short action Savage in 6.5 Grendel. I can purchase short action Savage's used for a reasonable amount. Bolt heads for PPC cartridges are available from Pacific Tool & Gauge and a barrel from McGowen chambered in 6.5 Grendel. What I don't know is: is there a DBM available that will work with this cartridge?

I thought about that combo. I think you could start with a short action DBM and see if that feeds. You could fabricate a spacer if it needs some help. Search on CF or stagger feed. I thought someone already did something and had some recommendations on the best one.

Savage offered a scout rifle in 7.62x39. That is the mag box to use for the Grendel cartridge. It was a CF rifle and that's the only real way to go with factory DBM.

I built a nice 6.5 Grendel rifle. It's on a SF action and I use a 223 SF mag box. It is reliable and effective for reloading.

Gunshack also offers bolt heads.

The part number for that 7.62x39 magazine box (centerfeed) is108664.

I just talked to Savage and the proper part number for the 7.62X39 complete magazine is 108663. The cost, including shipping is $61.

The part number I gave is just for the box itself. You can usually save about $15 by ordering all three magazine parts seperately rather than buying a complete magazine assembly.

The 7.62x39 uses the standard 223 follower, P/N 106253 $4.00
7.62x39 magazine box P/N 108664 $19.00

you can use serial number H800634 when calling Savage

it was designed to run a larger bullet in a ar15 platform, outside of that its irrelevant.

Why would he do it? Maybe for the same reason I, and others did it. And I also have a 260 Rem. "More power" is a great cliche for Tool Time, but it is not appropriate in marksmanship "if it is not needed". Guys with a 6.5WSM or RSAUM could also ask "why stop with a 6.5CM or 260Rem".

The reason I built a 6.5Grendel is:

1. All of my shooting is limited to 300yds or less.

2. The PPU case, which the Grendel case is based on, along with the known qualities of the 6.5mm bullet, combine for a very accurate combination.

3. I can not see burning 800/1000 yds worth of powder when limited to 300yds. The 30/06 became the 308Win because needs changed, and the 308 led to the 308 x 1 1/2" Barnes which led to the 30BR, one very successful bench rest round.

4. It has always been said "bring enough gun". For my kind of shooting, the 6.5 Grendel is enough gun.

5. And the 6.5 Grendel "Does Not SUCK". JMHO ... Just Sayin :-)

I couldn't agree more! 6.5 Grendel have no advantages over 260 in a bolt gun. Thier place is in an ar, in a bolt gun you can load 260 to Grendel velocity if you want. Same goes for 300 blk/ 308 in a bolt gun

if your inside of 300 why even go with a 6.5. my 22-250 does 300 with ease, 243 as well, less powder than a Grendel. I don't get it, but that's ok, I was just wondering what the reasoning was and wanted him to be sure there are other short action options that in my eyes are better options. not trying to step on anyones toes

I wanted to try a bolt action in 6.5 Grendel because I already have an AR in 6.5 Grendel and reload for it. It does so well in my AR that I want to have a bolt action in the same chambering to see how it does in a bolt action.
