A person offered me a model 99 DL series A in 243 caliber serial # starts A776 for my 1971 model 99 series A in 300 caliber with 20" barrel Schnabel forearm and rear stock is straight with lever. Just looking for some honest opinions as to what people think of the the deal.. thanks

Is the buttplate on your 'A' a shotgun plate? If so, it is a late model 'A', I believe (marketed as a saddle gun), and the 100% value is under $500. The 100% Value of the DL is $700. If the condition is similar, it would be a very good trade. I was incorrect when I said the EG was the last of the 99's with a schnabel forearm... seems that the 'A' made from 1971-81 had the schnabel, as a nod to the original 'A' 0f 1920-36, as well as the straight grip.

There were three types of early buttplates (not counting the rare musket)... The first was the "rifle", a gracefully curved crescent, with a tang that came up and over the top. The "Carbine" plate has a deep curve in the center, and is essentially a tangless plate that only covers the end of the butt. The "shotgun" buttplate is often flat or just slightly curved and also covers the end only. The shotgun type became the most common in later years, eventually becoming just a flat plate, with the "shotgun" description dropped.
