Thanks, yea the rings are a little high on a bolt action that's because I alternate my scopes. Sometimes that scope is on my AR-10 in which those rings are as low as I can go with a flattop AR type rifle and they are actually perfect for that. They still work pretty well for me on a bolt gun albeit yes they could be a little lower.

I live on James Island just outside of Charleston for 100yds or less I usually go to either Twin Ponds or Boggy Head the two public rifle ranges in the Francis Marion National Forest I am also a member of a private range that goes out to 600yds which is near Orangeburg its a little bit of a drive, but 100yds just doesn't do it for me anymore...lol

I hear ya, I'm up 17 a ways from you... have hit Boggy Head and TP a few times but like you 100 yards isn't "fun" anymore except as a starting point to sight in at. I'm lucky enough to have family with property close by; we have a trail (more like a road) cut on the one side of the property that gives about 600 yards but have been looking for places to go out to 1k; just hard to come by.

There is the Palmetto Gun Club that has a 1000yd range nearby, but you got to be a member and I heard there's a waiting list now. I have been to a 1000yd range just outside of Greenville called SCOTG (South Carolina Offical Training Grounds) its private, but you can call the guy that runs it and buy a day pass. Sounds like you and me are in the same boat...lol

PGC is also, from what I understand, by "invite"... have to be recommended by a member and is a bit on the steep side for fees from what I hear. Greenville is a long haul but... if the price is reasonable and doesn't involve long term membership dues it may be more "worth it" than other options. I just need to start asking around... out here in the boonies there has to be someone with a big enough cornfield... or a wide swath cut for power lines that is long and straight enough.

Yea they do 3 Gun matches out there and some other stuff. If you do take trip up there for the 1k range I highly recommend you do not go when they are having any kind of tournament or match I made the mistake of going up there when they had a 3 gun match going and didn't really even get a chance to shoot because they were using part of the 1k range for the match, but I did get to check it out none the less. The 600yd range I go to is pretty nice we have steel targets set up at every 100yds its got a really nice covered shooting area with around 8 concrete benches or you can shoot prone in between its only around $250 a yr and you get the pass code for the gate.

Nice looking range. For any distance shooting back there I ended up at. My Uncle's place near Ft. Motte shooting across soybean fields. Now living in SD I have lots of options for long range shooting. You are always welcome to visit, just bring a plate or two of Sweatman's BBQ from Holly Hill.

I used to deer hunt with a club called Halfway Swamp right down from Ft. Motte and yes there were plenty of 500+yds shots that could have been taken if you had the skills/confidence....I didn't at least not on deer.....lol. Thanks for the offer I might have to take you up on that one day and I will bring all the Sweatman's you can eat if we can go pheasant hunting......lol

This is from one of the tree stands... its about 650 yards from this stand to the stand you can't make out at the other end measured by Google Earth. This is my "range" when its not hunting season as well... nice to have family with property.

Down side here in coastal SC... this spot is a rare exception to the rule. Generally it boils down to how big cornfields get. Ranges here are few and far between too unless you are willing to stick 100 yarders. Mostly flat land makes having a good backstop more difficult without a hill behind the target; need a good thick stand of timber to ensure bullets don't keep going.
Good thing is I live in the middle of a bunch of pine trees and corn fields; have neighbors and family who don't mind me making loud noises on/around their property which helps. Nicest part is that stand is about a 30 minute walk from the back door... worst part is seeing 10 or so deer at the other end of that road knowing you may be able to make the shot but really shouldn't... never fails they are always at the opposite end from where I decide to sit any given day.

I'll say. I live on Fripp Island in winter and have to drive 60 miles for a decent range.


I shoot just up the road from Maltese at "Have Gun Will Sell" in Varnville....on goes to 200yds but I like it.
