if you take the barrel out of a savage target action and set a brand new unfired case in the barrel, how much of the case should stick out the back end?

Also, is there a tolerance for how close the rear of the barrel should be to the front of the bolt when the bolt is closed?

Thanks
Nick

A headspace gauge should stick out .125".
The bolt head face depth is very close to .115" so that leaves .010" gap. Remember, the face is slightly dished from the tumbling process so clean the head and measure around the outside edge of the face.

my head space gauge is still on order but I put a new Lapua 6.5 x 47 case necked down in a full size die into the new McGowan barrel chambered in 6 x 47Lapua and the case sticks out .145"

Is that OK?

You can get away with that, but I suspect it is chambered short. Doesn't suprize me it's a McGowen. ::)

Sounds like you got one for a Marlin, they have a taller hood and more case sticking out of the barrel.

EDIT: This is of course if your sized case drops right in and hits bottom [the shoulder].

Be nice Fred. Everyone has to learn their lesson their own way.

Why? Is there a history here?

McGowan's total lack of QC, is the history he is talking about.

I hate to publicly bash anybody, but every McGowen barrel that has came through my shop for an install had some sort of issues. I know everybody makes mistakes, myself included, but there is no reason for a barrel maker to make the same mistakes over and over.
