Wow, it has been a loonnnggg time since I have been on this site. Please forgive me if this isn't the appropriate place to put this. Will a Savage action be capable of handling a 338-378 Weatherby cartridge? I can't even remember how to delete this post because I am sure it is not in the right area!!!

Welcome back, no it can't handle it only a Weatherby with it's 9 locking lugs, and maybe some of those custom actions, I have looked into it many times.
I really want a 460 WBY but it will have to wait.

I personaly would be hesitant to put any of the larger 338 cartridges on a Savage or a 700 Rem also.
That said it is being done. My son has a 338x378w on the large Sako 995 3 lug action. Of coarse a Mark V Weatherby action will work also.
You can expect about 3000 fps from the 338x378w + or - about 50 fps with a 30" barrel using a 300 gr bullet.
The 338 Edge would be very similar and could be built on the standard mag bolt face.
The only advantage of owning a 338 for long range hunting is the 300 gr bullet.
If your intent is to use lighter bullets for addittional velocity, you would be defeating the advantage the 338 has.
In which case you would be better off with a large 30 cal.

Thanks for the info, yobuck. I built an Edge a few years ago and love it. Just looking for some thing new. I was pretty sure it wouldn't work on a Savage action, but figured I should check first.

I shoot 300s only with my Edge! Great rifle/round combo!

I love the 125gr case capacity of those WBY cases, I am all hot and bothered at the thought of sending those Barnes 160s 4500 fps.

A hundred fps or so really dosent really matter all that much. Thats what scope dials are for anyway.
My 338 takes 30 more grains of powder than my sons to push the same bullet about 250 fps faster.
Yet watching the impact of both guns at 1500 yds dosent show night and day differences.
My gun required a custom action, and about $1000 of new loading equiptment so i could load for it.
So there are lots of things to consider when contemplating a big boomer. Now in fairness to me, i already
had the gun, and it didnt cost any more to rebarrel it for a big case. But you just dont go anywhere and buy brass,
and you do need a big press, custom made dies, new case trimmer, new priming tool etc. Whereas with an Edge,
or even the 338x378 the loading aspect is much more reasonable.
So if your thinking bigger, go bigger. 375 cal or even a 50 cal.

Is there enough difference in the Rem. Ultra Action to do something like Mr. 319 is asking about or is it a std. long Rem. action just milled differently for the larger cartridge? Paul
