Just got back from the south west edge of Kansas. Had to dodge thunderstorms and wind was 20 mph+... But we still had a Great time!! The pups were up in force, no bigger than a robin but there in good numbers. Rattle snakes out too thou. We got to shoot a lot with in 100 yds at first, just took those from the truck. Once the close shots slowed down we set up off the tri-pods and bench and went to work on the longer shots. Shooting was 360 degs and almost non stop. We were in the center of a mile+ field with a large wash running thru it. Perfect for shooting anyway you could see one. The weather was really poor for pdog shooting, cold, cloudy, and rainy. I would love to have seen it on a sunny 80 deg day with calm winds. Made several shots out past 600 yd, alot past 400 yd. Our goal was to concentrate on shots out past a 1\4 mile, so the trip was everything we had hoped for. Bill

Rain washed us out of my favorite shootin spot on Saterday and the batteries died on the first pic I tryed to take so no pics :'( First trip out for the year with last years rookie and a new rookie so we headed north out of the rain and found a couple towns. The towns where small (40 acers + or-) but with the pups fresh out of the mounds the shootin was good. Long shots where only 400 yards but man is a pup a small target with a 204 and 223 @ that range ;D
Had a couple of the old J,s (223&243) out and the left handed 204. The 204 shootin 40 grain Vmaxes was really spreading the parts around, does a great job of dismantling pups but just not enough umpgh to send an adult very far. The new Striker in 22-250 did alright with the 40 grain Vmaxes but with a rifle scope on it I didnt get to see any of the hits personaly :-[
There are a few dogs left a mile from the house but between the county poisoning and the plague going through the numbers are WAY down, finding a good spot to shoot is tuff these days.

We had trouble doping 20 mph wind... 40gr vax out of 22-250 blows along way at 400 + yds. I shot the 6 br with 105 Amax with good results, wind drift was 1\2 the lighter loads. Neither had consistent splatter at long range thou. The 40 gr vmax out past 400 adult pdogs just rolled over. My bride shot one 3 times before we could tell it was dead. Looked to be trying to hunker down and hide.

We have family in the Ulysses area... Bill
