I am in the process of putting together a medium to long range(200-600 yards) hog hunting rifle in .308 and am at the point I am ready to rebarrel and choose a bullet weight so I can decide on a twist rate for the new barrel. I dont have the knowledge or equipment to reload so I will be looking for a round that I can purchase online or off the shelf. I am liking the sierra 175 and 190s coefficient. From the chart tiborasaurusrex put together but I am open minded if anyone has some real world experience to share. Is this a viable goal for the 308 cartridge at these ranges? As much as these critters tear up my fence and root up my pastures I am not knowingly going to take pot shots on them, I want it to be as ethical as possible.

I use the 180 grain sierra game kings on them out of a 16"long 10" twist barrel. I have also used the Berger 185 grain juggernauts. I think I'm going to stick to juggs after the sierras run out.

Don't get hung-up on BC, it is used MOSTLY to be the "Sex" that sells product.
Fired at sea level, 59 degrees, 20% humidity, Zeroed at 100. Launch speed of 2550 fps. 600 yards(per your max)
Speer 165gr Hot Cor, flat base Vs. 175 SMK.

Hot-Cor - 5.3 mils correction. 1510 fps. 836 ft/lb
SMK - 5.0 mils correction. 1603 fps. 998ft/lb

If 0.3 mils causes you enough concern to "miss" the animal, you have no business taking that shot anyway. Likewise the energy difference is not going to be noticable to the animal.
Assuming a clean shot, that is below the operational window, where the SMK will do anything other that pencil through. The hot Cor window is approx 1400 fps.
There was an article written some time ago now, with a visual comparison of bullets fired into game. Was Written by Gary Sciuchetti. Titled something like "The Best Hunting Bullet"

Twist won't matter either way, but my 308 that I shoot the 175's to a mile with, and the Hot Cor's for hunting; is a 10-twist.

I found the 178 a-max to be my favorite baqllance of velocity, expansion, accuracy AND BC in the 308 win.
