.250 Savage Factory Chambering

Hi all,

I recently picked up a 22" take-off barrel from a Savage 16 in .250 Savage.

I'm also looking at a Model 14 in .250 that is supposed to be only a couple years old.

Was the .250 a factory chambering in the recent past for Savage or are these Custom Shop barrels/guns I am running into?

If it was a factory chambering, would it be a rarer find and as such maybe be a little more valuable? I feel like I can maybe buy this 14 for the right price.

Buy it. I believe Savage chambered the .250 in the model 14 American Classic up to last year and then discontinued it. I don't know that it would be any more valuable but it is a very sweet cartridge. The .250 does not get the praises and recognition it deserves and its a crying shame that it is basically obsolete these days. With todays modern powders and bullets it is an amazing cartridge and capable of much more than given credit for. I have built three .250s over the years one for me one for the wife and one for my nephew. We are all running 115gr Bergers over 2800fps and they kill extremely well. I have taken deer at up to 667 yards feral hogs and a bunch of coyotes with mine and my nephew used his on a big Arizona cow elk at 200 yards. He hit the elk perfectly behind the shoulder and got full penetration leaving a baseball sized exit wound on the off side. Upon field dressing the animal the heart was found lodged up into the Elks neck. Impressed is an understatement. All this performance from a 115gr bullet and 37 grains of powder and only a mouse fart of recoil. Got to love it.

.250 Savage is a great round for reloaders. Do not expect much in the way of off the shelf ammo since it is seldom available. Also brass is somewhat hard to find. You can easily resize 22-250 brass.

That would explain 1), how I wound up with the factory 16 barrel and 2), this rifle here, it is a 14 AC and it is one nice looking rifle. Only been able to see pictures so far but I ran the SN and it comes up as a 14 AC in .250.

I can't go after it until next Wednesday but looks like I have a good chance to get it.

Good luck on acquiring it. When you do, pictures will be a must. Reading about the 250 cartridge has me thinking I need to do one in a varmint weight barrel on my centerfeed short action.

Don't overlook the Shaw chambered barrels in .250 at Midway for $127. I bought one in the fall, but back problems kept me from wringing it out and taking a deer with it. I am much better now, so a load development program is in the works.
