Hey guys. So I'm a little confused with my recent build. I rebarreled my model 111 with a Shilen Select Match barrel and used PTG go and no-go gauges to set the headspace correctly. The bolt closes on the Go gauge and not on the NoGo gauge. But when I took the rifle to the range to test it, I noticed a slightly protruding ring around the cases head. Everything I read says it's a sign of too much headspace but how is that possible if the Go an NoGo gauges check properly?

That's not a sign of headspace issues, that's a sign of pressure.

But the rounds I was shooting were factory loads. Winchester Super X 150gr and 165gr.

Can you post pics of the fired cases?
What is the rifle chambered in?

I don't have a picture at the moment as I'm out of town for work but the rifle is chambered in 30-06 Springfield

It looks exactly like this:

Looks like the brass just fit the chamber as would be expected. Are there actually signs of case head separation? If not I'd say what you are seeing is normal with a generic chamber and ammo.

My 308 fired cases look like that.

Assuming no hard bolt lift you should be OK.

I would double check your headspace just to be sure.

Thanks guys. there are no signs on any separation, just that really faing ring. And the bolt lifts just fine with the typical Savage resistance from firing pin spring compression. I also checked and rechecked the headspace after I shot that day so unless my gauges are wrong, the headspace is correct. Thanks again guys. I really appreciate all the responses.

Have you tried sizing a case yet?

This may be a stupid question but it's worth going back over the simple things sometimes. Did you remove the ejector from the bolt when you set the headspace on your new barrel?
