Model 116 stainless 30-06 load?

Anyone have a good load worked up for this model 116 stainless 30-06 i can strat with. i have loaded a few rounds and bullet is jumping every wheres. how many bullets to you guys load at a time to test each loads with? thanks for any help. forgot i will be using either a 150gr or 165 grain bullet. would like to use the combine silver tip ones.

Hodgton or IMR 4350 in the mid 50grs starting charge with a 150 or 165 and work your way up, sierra gameking.

48.0gr of IMR 4064 and whatever flavor of 168gr bullet you want. This load has worked for me in multiple rifles.

Add Accurate 4350 to that list. My beloved '06 does very well with IMR 4350 & AA4350.

I start with the Lyman manual - up 1gr from lowest charge of a particular bullet. Load in groups of 3 to test.

150 Sierras and Nosler Custom Comps are pretty easy to load for. I use those for general practice / plinkage.

For more serious shooting - I use 168's 175's 180's and 200's with 4350. The IMR and Accurate are about 2 - 3 10ths of a grain different in loads.
No complaints.


PS - Of course you've eliminated as many variables as possible, correct? Things like, scope is tight, shooting off a bipod or bags not touching the barrel, floated barrel, bag under the rear, no wind, sunny day, no women yakking while you're lining up a shot, etc...

what is the bullet seating depth you guys using?

My barrel likes .030" off the lands.
I find each one likes it a little different than the others.

Pick a start point on your COL, find a charge that works best for you then adjust your seating depth.

Adjust one thing at a time. You'll probably find greater variations with powder charges than seating depths - unless you're sinking 'em in the barrel .050" or so. I like to give them a little "running room" to start. After the powder charge is tuned and I'm getting 3 to 5 round groups under .75 I play with seating.
And it usually comes back to where I started. About .030" in.

I agree, I also just found out that the Sierra book hunting load for 165 class is dead on in three rifles. 46.4 R15. Whodathunkit?

well fellas i loaded 6 rounds of IMR-4350 at 55.5 grains and 150 grain ballistic silver tips and cci primers and got this group at 100yds. what do you fellas think i should do. go or down in powder ?

Mr Lyman says:

150gr / .308" / 30 cal. bullets
IMR4350 - 49.0 to 57.0gr.

Why would you start so close to the top?
Try starting around 50.0. Load 4 rounds.
Then, load 3 of each - 50.5, 51.0, 51.5, 52.0, 52.5 - for a total of 5 groups of 3 each.
I'll bet you a nickel - heck, I'll even go a whole dime one of those 3 round groups will be the size of a quarter.
Providing you do your part to the very best of your ability.

Don't forget to let the barrel cool a little between groups.

I agree with FGW in FLA. I always use a minimum of 200 yd target if good accuracy could be critical. Preferably 300yds.

IMR4064 and CCI primers has worked really well for me in the 30.06. The velocity spread was so tight at a less than full charge on a couple rifles I just settled in at that powder charge and worked on other factors to tighten the group as much as possible.

Problem is, one rifle was my brothers, I of course returned that to him after I developed a load for the gun, then I improved the chamber on the other, and now I get to start over. Soon anyway, fire form some more brass first.

All the other cartridges I've loaded over the years and I've never fallen on a powder/charge/primer combination that had such a tight spread in velocity so quickly. Usually takes a little more trial and mostly error.

No problem. I am an avid lover of the 30.06 in fact, I like my beloved '06 so much I'm acquiring the stuff to put another one together.
