Barrel cut/crown/threading question

For the gunsmiths among us...

Does the barrel need to be removed from a Savage 10/110 action in order to cut it down (say from 26 to 20") and thread the muzzle?

What about a 700?

Depends on the lathe but you shouldn't need to.

I have to with my lathe as my head stock is 34"

I do most of mine between centers so I take mine down. It all depends on the smiths setup. I think it's easier to take them down even if you have a short head stock lathe.

My south bend 9" only has 3/4" hole through the spindle as well. Would have to come off for me to do it.
