Well, since I have only gotten one reply in the reloading area I thought I would try here. You folks with after market .260 Rem barrels, what is the max OAL you can get with 140 SKMs to the lands? I am trying to figure out if my new barrel is chambered a bit short for 140,142 SMK and 140VLD. Thanks!

319 looks as though I am the only one answering you, I have 140gr smk's coming and will give you measurements off of them if you want.
With the Speers I ended up at 2.751 which is 0.030 off the lands with this Shilen barrel. Weather providing I will be at the range tomorrow for barrel break in and possibly shooting for groups. I won't waste the morning just throwing ammo down range I will be sighting in and trying to get the best groups possible but this is not match ammo so I don't expect clover leafs but I hope to get good tight grouping for a starting point.

Froggy, I appreciate the info! I know there are a lot of people here shooting .260 so I hope it is just a matter of time before they chime in. Thanks again!

319,

I have a Lilja barrel that was chambered with a match reamer from PTG. I shoot 142SMK .020" off the lands. My OAL is 2.880"
Hope this helps

Thanks Dino, I will have to check my max with the 142s just to make sure I am in the ballpark

319, I don't understand what your asking for. Every chamber is differant, so what my oal to the lands will be diff from yours. I have a Broughton 8 twist 260 and various 6.5 bullets 130, 140 vld 120 amax 120 BT, no sierra right now. I will give you am measurement you want if you can tell me exactly what you are looking for. I had mine chambered so that I could get a 140 to the lands and still fit in a wyatt ext mag box. Are you trying to fit your load in a magazine or just want to know whta a max lenght a 142 can be seated and shot out of a 260. My thought is that you would want at least 1/8" of the bearing surface of the bullet seated in the neck as a minimum. Eric

Eric, I know that each will be a bit different, but I want to know if mine is a lot shorter than most or just a bit. I am asking for max OAL a person can get in their own 260 so I can get a "rough" base line to go off.

319, thats fair enough. Hope any of this helps. These are in a Rem 700 wyatt mag box, Broughton barrel:140 target vld oal 2.930, 130 hunting vld oal 2.918, and 130 Accu bond 2.828. All three bullets are well seated in the necks. I also have 100 and 120 ball tip and 120 Amax if that would help. Good luck Eric

Right now I'm loading 140gr Nosler BTHP Competitons at an OAL of 2.84 inches in my .260AI.

Take the barrel off of the action and do this:

- - - Seat a dummy (no powder/primer) round with the 140 grain bullet sticking way out of tha case.

- - - Put the dummy round into the chamber.

- - - Keep seating the bullet deeper by 20 thousants or so until you can freely turn the dummy round in tha chamber.

- - - Take the freely turnable dummy round and measure it.

- - - Make some more dummy rounds that are like this.. 25 thousants longer / 15 thousants longer 10 thousants
longer, etc. (Don't worry about making them shorter because you're not interested in that).

- - - Put the barrel back on the action using proper headspace and then chamber the too long dummy rounds one
at a time. use some 4 (OOOO) steel wool and shine the bullet, then seat each bullet, then use a mag glass to
look for land marks.

Now send me my twenty bucks!

LSU, you lost me there. What is the point of doing what you explained? I already know what my max seating depth is, I want to know what others are getting for max. Or did I miss some thing?

If you know what your max seating depth is, why care about what someone else's barrel is throated for?

319 what is your max. oal?
After following this post I am ready to take mine appart to see if I did something wrong. Seeing as how my oal is much shorter than what others are posting, my oal jammed to where the bolt almost doesn't close is what everyone is saying theirs are set to. So now you have me wondering if I have a short cut chamber, or are they using an AI?

Using my caliper, and Hornady bullet comp/OAL gauge I got 2.765 using a SMK 140gr and the modified case for the OAL gauge. That is right at the max shown in my Sierra book. So far most people are giving me numbers in the 2.8 range. Looks like they gave me a heavy bullet twist with a lighter bullet throat. GREAT! ::)

Mine is a Shilen Varmint and I have remeasured and the specs I gave you are right on.

The numbers I gave were OAL Tip of bullet to base of cartridge. I think the measurement with the comparator is COAL (I could be wrong)cartridge head to olgive, but that should account for the diferances.

I guess I take Cartridge Over All Length and Over All Length as the same thing. I use the Ogive measurement when I load to get the seating depth as close as possible, but in this case my 2.765 measurement is tip of the bullet to the base of the case, just as yours was. Thanks!

You could use a dummy rnd and your cleaning rod & then the rod to the bolt face to get the measurement your after. Good luck, Joe
