leaning real hard towards getting a Shilen barrel for My savage and was wondering what if any reason I should go longer than the stock 22"? Going to be using it equally between target and hunting use...

Also what about twist rates? should I stick with 1:10 or go to 1:12? got My AR twist figured out, but this is My first time at the .308 bolt gun...

No need to go longer.

If you are wanting to shoot a heavy bullet at all go with 1:10

1:10 for long bullets.

22 is good.
Actually I like 20" barrels the best for hunting.

I am getting ready to load up some 208 gr amaxes over
RL17. A few guys I have read about are getting around 2600-2650 out of
26" barrels.

At 2500 fps with that bullet you will still be supersonic and over 850 FPE out to 1000 yards.
