View Full Version : Rimfire Mag ID Help NRA Sporter?

Hello All,

I'm trying to ID a Mag that I found in a garage sale box. I think it's for a Savage M19/23 or NRA Sporter but nothing I've found on this site so far
has this type of caliber stamp. Any help verifying that it is what I suspect?
Most of the finish is gone but there's no rust and it seems to be functional.

Looks like the older type mag, they fit the model 1922's and full length stock type model 1919's.

Thanks, So the mag would not be useable in a 23 or sporter?

Right now I'm thinking no.

For some reason I think the 23AA used different mags than that one.

If Sav22 shows up he could probably tell you up to what serial number they used those ones in, just gotta wait for him.

It's the first type of 5 shot for the bolt actions and was for the early 1919 NRA & 1922 SPORTER's, the second & third type which were used in the later guns looked virtually the same but were stamped different and had some minor differences in the parts. From my experience they all interchange with slight variations in the length of the rib on the rear causing feeding issues with some magazines in some guns. Later magazines will have the model they are for stamped on one side and will be stamped just for '22 LONG RIFLE'. In 1933 with the 23-AA & 19-33 NRA they changed to a curved magazine.

The feeding lips look very straight on your magazine so it should function well, but it has been taken apart, the two small tabs on that are supposed to be bent over the rear of the bottom plate to secure it are broken off, which often happens if they are straighten to allow removal of the bottom.

Good catch on the broken tabs. Not knowing they should be there, I never noticed they were missing. This was in a box of pistol mags. I don't have any older savage 22's and wasn't sure what it was.
