I just bought a Model 99 E Series A Made in Westfield Mass. The serial number is E009586. It does not have the mark at the lever.
Can someone tell me what year my rifle was made?
Also is it possible to buy a rear sight for it?

It's a later rifle made in 1982.

Probably has two holes in the barrel for a Williams Guide ramp rear sight, correct?

It does have two threaded holes in the barrel
How did you come up with the date?
IF you are correct, that is disappointing. I thought it may have been one of the first ones made in 1961

No it's correct if the serial number you gave me is correct.

Ok

Thank you for the guidance. I really appreciate it.
Even though it is not one of the old ones, I am still glad I got it.
Also thanks for the guidance on the rear sight. I found their website
and will be getting a rear sight for it soon.

Thanks again!!!!

I recently acquired an Savage 99 EG sr# 7164xx, date code E(1953). I have Mr. Murray's book. "The Ninety-Nine" and can find no mention of the "lever boss date codes". Am I overlooking them in his.book or they not included?
Thanks, virrob

Nope, Murray never added the date codes to his book, you didn't miss them.

Thanks for the information, I wonder why. From my brief experience, the lever boss date codes are the primary way of dating a large number of 99's.

It is to a point. Only from 1949 to 1960, after that it went to the A series serial number system where every Savage gun coming off the line was in the same serial range, didn't matter what model it was.

Still, several years and the code is considered the only way to date them. He had 25 years to as least mention them. It is still a great book.

where can I get hold of Mr. Murrays Book. I seem to have acquired quite a few 99's over the years and would like some history.
My father's 99 was a take down in 303 with the straight stock. also have some savage ammo. even for the 22 hi power.
