I have both, but not in that power. I'd say get the Nikon. It's a monarch, if it was a buckmaster, I'd say go with the viper. I like my viper, but in no way is it a monarch.

I'm sure you'll get just as many that say the opposite...

So get both, just to be safe!

I am a retired TV news cameraman and a bit of a Nazi when it come to optics. I have never had a bad piece of Nikon glass. When it come to internals like turret adjustments and such, I don't know. I have never owned a Vortex.

I just scoped a savage rifle my brother just bought with a vortex rifle scope and am very impressed with the clearity. It was a basic 2.5-10x50 crossfire that cost him about $120 and the clearity is amazing. When I build my 6.5x47L Im going with a vortex.

Recently got a Viper, 6.5-20x50 wide duplex. Sweet piece of equipment. Easily the optics equal to an elite 4200 if your familiar with them. Ton of elevation adjustment. Turrets are nice and the side focus is positive. Only Nikon I have is a Buckmaster. Different league...

Vortex all the way. Glass and features are comparable across both lines but Vortex wins hands down in Warranty and Customer Service.

Adam,

I just did a quick price check on the Monarch scope from Bud's Gun Shop to see if Midway is close. I have purchased from them before and used my registered login with them. I received an email reply within 20 seconds. Here is their price to me...

Dear Pieter K. the price quote you requested on our item,
Nikon MONARCH 4-16X42SF BDC Matte,
listed on BudsGunShop.com for MSRP:

We will sell it to you for $386.00. (The price does NOT include shipping.)
This quote is good until 9:00AM EST tomorrow, May 20, 2010.

Compared to $449.95 from Midway.

Just a heads up... $63.95 less!!

I am a born believer in Vortex. I have seen side by side comparison on Vortex against Bosh and Lomb, Bushnell, Leupold, and other top name scopes to find that the Vortex will more than hang with them, and most cases beat them in clarity.

Just my observation on my own gun. I used a Weaver T36 on my long range gun. It got me through a few competitions, and was nice to use on Steel targets. Last year I got a startling surprise. I switched to a Vortex Crossfire 8-32, and all I can say is WOW! The Vortex is hands down much clearer. I have shot steel targets at 600 yards several times with the weaver, and you could see the bullet hit the target, and a black spot appear. What I saw with the Vortex was when the round hit the plate I saw the copper from the jacket shoot off left, and right of the Target. This I had never seen before! It was right there I realized how much clearer the vortex was compared to my T36. To add to this the Vortex is only a 32 power, the Weaver is a 36 power, and has 4 power more. Think about it, have you ever shoot with a 4 power scope, and nothing at all? It is a big difference.

From that I have grown to love my Vortex scope.

I used to have the 6.5-20 Nikon like you have. Was a nice scope but no adjustment. Also had a few Buckmasters.
Bought my first Vortex Viper from SSS when they first came out. I have since sold all my Nikons,Bushnell Elite's, Leupolds, etc. and replaced them with Vortex Vipers(and 1 SIII). I have owned atleast 5 or 6 or them and still currently have 4 of the 6.5-20x50's. Have never had an issue with any, and they are very bright and clear. The only reason I got rid of some was to get a different reticle.

I have even talked quite a few others on the site into getting them and they have been extremely happy. You wouldnt be unhappy with it Im sure.

I'm one of the guys that Mike (Pdog06) talked into a Vortex Viper. My preference is for the smaller objective lens so I got the 6.5X20X44 and I love it. There are going to be some more Leupolds etc for sale as I switch over to Vortex across the board. BTW, I also have the Vortex Razor Binos and they are as good as any I have used.

Just got back from the range with my new Viper 3-9 w/ BDC reticle. Got my 22-250 sighted in, love the scope. Got it on paper at 100 yds, calculated I needed 16 clicks right to be dead on, clicked 16 right, held dead on at a clay target at 200 yds, squeezed trigger, nothing but dust. Scope tracks really well. Also got my 300 win mag to shoot a handload under a minute...finally found the sweet spot.

I would pick a Nikon over a Vortex, but take a look at Bushnell's Tactical Elite 4200 series. Might run you a little more, but you'll be amazed. Someone mentioned Nikon and camera lenses above. Sorry, but I was always and will continue to be a Canon man. Now if we could just get them to start making rifle scopes.

Based on Canon's current crop of dSLR's it'll be about ten more years, before they finally "discover" a 51-point AF system. :D

picked up a vortex crossfie about a month or so ago and put it on my 12lrpv and love it i think it is better than the 4200elite i have on my 308 and i'm thinking about replacing it with the same crossfire (8x32x50 AO). for their lower end scope its great optically and quallity wise went to the range yesterday and the range master is thinking of replacing one of his lupy's with one . some say the glass is not as good as the higher end scope and they see the fuzzy edges around the outside but clear as a bell when set on 8 power or when cranked up to 32 power (which is where it stay 99% off the time)

I have always been a Nikon fan (Monarchs on all rifles), but I will be buying Vortex from this point on. Great products, exceelent glass and the best warranty and CS in the industry. No brainer.
