Welding Recoil Lug To Receiver

Hello. I had a friend of mine in the aircraft industry weld a match recoil lug to a Savage varmint receiver along with closing in the top with a piece of stainless now it looks like a LRP receiver but with small shank threads. I have fired 40 rounds of 185grn Fusion ammo through it and everything seems to be ok. Do I need to have the receiver heat treated.? My friend said I do not have to. My next project is to have the lug welded and a one piece scope mount welded to the receiver. What say you folks.

To change the harmonics of the receiver and the connection between the barrel and the receiver and the rifle shoots much better. Like a completely different rifle. I don't know how to include pics. Tell me how and I will.

don't THINK it will hurt a thing. I had a Rem 700 like that for years. Used for Hunter class Br. shot thousands of rounds of high pressure
through it. It shot well. Had it hard chromed also.
Gave it to Gunsmith's Daughter after he passed. He was a good friend.

Im interested in how much welding was done...spot welding or welding completely around the lug. I guess he had to do some grinding, filing or something to make it look presentable??

He hi tech welded around the lug and precision ground back the radius. Plus they measured all the dimensions on a comparateur and remeasured the dimensions and the dimensions were all the same... I wish someone would provide me with an email so I could send them the pictures and they could post them because I don't know how to post pics... Plus a company 411 tactical my start providing the service since it turned out so well.

Not very many ppl qualified to answer your question.

Usually after weld you anneal to relieve stress and soften it back up a tad.
I doubt anyone here can be of much help. Without doing a hardness test on it and knowing what your working with and how it was welded your guessing.

Just buy a win 70 and be done with it. Or aftermarket actions

70s and 700s out of the box will not out shoot a Savage and never have... You buy the 70 and I will keep playing with Savages... Custom actions are all based on 700s I won't shoot a 700. To make a 700 shoot well when it arrives throw the stock away, throw the trigger group in the trash can and replace the barrel ya great rifle... 4.6 million recall.

lol, someone has issues.

extremely nice job on the weld and machining, time will tell. i'm guessing itll all be good. barrel takes up most of the pressure, if anything the weld will crack but if you watch your pressures it'll be good.
