6mm-06?

I have a Savage 112bvss in .25-06 that is skunk headshot accurate from 50 to 200 yards with no hold over, but, somewhere after 250 yards the .257 drops off. I love this gun but like everyone else I want something better. I want something that will shoot flat out to 1000 yards or so. I shoot on my farm from the porch and less than 15 rounds a year so barrel weight and barrel life are no concern. I've always been curious how a really long barre ll would perform with a slow powder like Accurate 8700. I would like the most flat shooting varmint round/barrel I can find and this 6mm-06 seems impressive. I have also seen a 90gr .224 Berger bullet that looks like it would be fun to put in a 06 case. Anyway, I would like to re barrel this gun in something that fits the above bill, any suggestions?

WHOA! The 6x150mm Howitzer is always an option.

I built a 6.5x06. Would build that again, but with a name brand barrel with a better twist to stabilize the 140 AMax's. Throat it correctly and I believe you might have what you are looking for.

I would HIGHLY recommend coating the bullets with Danzac/WS2 or HBN (have not tried HBN yet).

The 338 RUM that I built for my shooting buddy still has a LOT of life left in the 32" Rock barrel. Has just over 1000 rounds down the tube and still going strong.

Would go pick a bullet that has a HUGE B.C. and then shove it into an '06 or Win Mag case. The 6.5/264 bullets have huge B.C. and the 7/.284 are just a touch behind them. There is a bit more bullet selection for the 6.5/.264 bullets. The 140 AMax is almost or just over 1.5" in length. If you added stabilizing fins to the boat tail....believe you might have NASA calling you.

There is also the 22/6mm AI (a.k.a. "Half mile 22"). Have not stretched the legs on mine yet...but 75 gr AMax's do rather well at 3950 fps.

In the 6.5x55 AI's that I built, we are at 3050 fps with H4831. Have NOT tried RL17 yet - should get to the 3100 fps without pressure issues...and a little more. :) An '06 case might do better, might not. Trade off between case fill, powder burn rate, ability to light the powder, blah, blah.

Berger's new 300 gr 338 caliber bullet is supposed to have .841 B.C....so.....:
You only gain 7 inches of drop at 1K yards over the SMK - don't think the cost is there for the difference at 1K yards - you will be dialing up anyway. :)

I have a 224TTH(22-6mm). I shoot the 69gr smk at 3575fps out of a 26"brl. It shoots the 75gr Amax good also but to get it to feed from magazine you have to seat bullet so deep in the case the case mouth is not touching the bullet(looks REALLY odd). I love the gun! I built it as a long range groundhog/coyote/deer gun. It shoots the 70gr Barnes triple shock 3750fps. This is with 47gr of reloader 19 with winchester LRM primers and winchester cases with both bullets. I have shot @ 400-500 rounds out of the gun so far and it still shoots as good as the day it was new. This is a VERY flat shooter and gives spectacular kills!

dcloco are you getting 3900fps with the 22-6mm? What are the gun/load specifics?

One of the local guys shoots a 6mm-06 for groundhogs/coyotes/deer. He is getting about 240 weatherby ballistics out of the gun. He shoots a 70gr bullet out of it at @ 3700fps. His only complaint is it recoils enough that he cant watch hit in scope.

3950 fps with a 22/6mm AI running 75 gr Amax with H4831 or H4831sc. I never looked for the top load...figured..WHY?

So, I load them down to 3650/3700. Have yet to stretch the legs on this one...but 75 gr AMax's at 3650 LAUNCH a full grown PD 20-25 feet in the air and send them backwards 20-30 feet.

Just curious on the load. I didnt realize you had an AI. The 22/6mm(224TTH) is a great longrange varmint gun. My load of a 69gr MK at 3550 is not a hot load at all. When we had the guns built there was not hardly any published data. I know it will shoot a 40gr ballistic tip at 4500fps+ with the same load my buddy shoots his 52gr Mk with.

If I had to do it over I would use a savage short action. My current gun is built on a rem short action and wont led me seat the 75gr Amax out far enough. I would also try the 80gr Amax, 77,80,90gr MK.
