I received bolt head from PTG for my Grendel conversion and it looks the same as the original one apart from the larger hole on the side of the bolt which is on the opposite side.
Does this matter? It is a left hand bolt action.
Thanks

If the ejector plunger is in the same orientation surly this must be the correct replacement and the larger hole on the side has no significance.
Yes/no?

With regards to the larger hole, if I'm not mistaken that is a gas hole in the event of a pierced or leaking primer. I have always been under the impression that it helped keep hot gases out of the bolt body by channeling it out the side if such an event were to occur.

Correct.

Correct.

Thanks, thought that was the case but had to be 100% correct.

And the reason it doesn't matter is that the action has vent holes on both sides to direct the gases away from your face. I'd hope that on a LH bolt, the bolt head would be drilled on the side facing away from you when the bolt is in the closed position.

I had to think a little on this one....the factory bolt heads are all vented on the same side. When closed the vents direct gas to the right, no matter if it's right or left handed. Ideally you want the vent to be opposite your face. If you are right handed shooting a left port action I'd want the vent to go right. The one pictured will direct most of the gas to the port side, which is good if you are shooting left handed.

Agreed. I have heard rumors about PT&G having some quality issues with some of their non machine tool products as of late. Is it possible the machine operator didn't know or think it mattered? Did it get past QC? Is the manufacture drawing off?

BTW, It is for a left hand action. Might be a little reverse engineering.

Actually it appears they've got their $hït together on this one, out thinking Savage and putting the vent on the correct side.

The PT&G Bolt head pictured is correct for the Left hand action, the original bolt head will exit gasses in front of the shooter's face.

That was my point.

Either side my face never gets that close.

Thanks for the replies, I too thought it directed the gases out the correct side when closed, it just confused me why the savage vent faced towards the shooter.(left handed)
Probably not a big deal anyway when compared to my AR or Mini that are suppressed.
