Anybody loading the 208 gr amax over RL17 in 308 ??

Just looking around the web, I am seeing some decent numbers, IE at around 2600 fps.
BC of .650 and a SD of over .3

Even at 2500 fps it still carries 850 fpe out to 1000 yards.

Should make an accurate long distance bullet for hogs and whatnot.

I'm going to start loading this combo. Seem to be getting pretty good result on the lands. Having a hard time finding the bullets, though......

Actually there are some guys over at snipershide that are shooting long bench barrels
and getting over 2700 fps.

Results from a 30" Kreiger from snipershide.
This is not me and 51 gr is probably way over max.
Most of these guys have their barrels throated so they can hang the bullets way out.

Did some testing today, RL-17 + 208 a-max in 308win, 30" Krieger barrel, 1-11" twist, temp was 91F at 150' above sea level.
48gr-2680fps
49gr-2720fps
50gr-2750fps
51gr-2830fps - flat primers bolt lift was normal.

If you run his load in QL 3.1" COL, 30" barrel, 208 gr amax over 51 gr of RL17 you get 2840 fps.

I will be chrono'ing some 308-208gr amax/RL17 loads out of a 22" barrel later this week, so I will post if interested.

Absolutely. I have a 26" barrel and if I can find some RL17 and 208gr Amax's, I will give it a try. Both seem to be scarce.

If you have a bass pro shops around, check them out.
I had just ordered 2# at $25 per plus haz mat and walked in and they had 5 1# bottle at $21 a pound.



I gave up on midway and whatnot for 208 gr amax bullets and started scouring the internet. I ended up paying $5 extra but so be it.
They are out now.

I went back over some of the loads I have found on the internet and re-ran my loads in QL.

The guys that are running these extreme FPS numbers, are using fire formed win brass that supposedly holds
around 57gr h20. Also running around 3.1" COL. Some are running moly bullets.

I have some new win brass and the capacity of that brass is 55.3 gr h20.

If you are running a 26" barrel and load to the max mag length of 2.95" COL, using new win brass,
you can probably get about 2650 FPS with 47.2 gr of RL17. QL returns 65k on that load.
Still good for 308.

These guys running 51 gr are really pushing it. With a 26" tube, 3.1" COL 57gr H2o capacity I am getting 2740fps
at 68.5k in QL.

the fast one also cut the throat longer to allow seating the bullet higher in the neck without touching the lands.
as the summer rolls in they are also finding the Re17 spikes pressures.
basically he started with the 208 and built an F-TR around it. gaming the 308 rules.

if you want mag feedable rounds 2500fps will get you to 1000m with 1200fps and you can likely get there with 24 - 26 inch barells and varget without having summer and winter loads.

The lands on my 308 savage sporter with 208 amax is 3" COL.

I am also going to eventually load some 250 gr 338 scenars in 338-06 over RL17 also for some high recoil long range hog hunting.

I shot some 338 250 gr gamekings (.565 BC) test loads over RL17 yesterday and the recoil was stout.
These were some really hot loads and I still did not have any brass flow. IE 56 gr of RL17, put it at about 63k.

Should be able to get about the same speed as a maxed out 308/208 RL17 load, IE around 2500-2600 out of it too
and that scenar bullet has basically the same BC as the 208 308 amax so same speed same trajectory.

RL17 is some really weird powder.
