View Full Version : Rechambering a 7mm-08 barrel to .284 Winchester for LA?

I am working on assembling my first Savage build. I've always wanted a .284 Winchester so this seems like as good a time as any to get one.

I am trying to avoid sinking a lot of money into this first build. Picking up a $350 barrel is not in the cards right now. I was thinking if I could round up a factory 7mm-08 barrel at a decent price I could just have it rechambered to .284... I think the .284 reamer would clean up the 7mm-08 chamber. My hope is that it would do so easily without removing any threads, etc, that would add to the cost. I'd be running this on a long action staggered feed blind mag action to utilize the full potential of the .284 by not having to seat the bullets too deep.

Would anything else need done action-wise? The donor is a .30-06 so the bolt face is good.

Anyone done anything along these lines?

The only thing you might need is a 6.5x284 mag box, and that's only if you were having feeding problems. If you're building off of a center-feed action, the Savage part number for that is 109003.

No, it's a staggered feed blind mag. Don't know about the larger bodied cartridge in the magazine. I know it can obviously hold 7mm or 300 mag ammo, but don't know if that's the same hardware.

I'd be willing to bet that it would feed pretty well from the magnum mag box. Perhaps a bit of tweaking of the feed lips.

Thanks, still debating. Ran across a .280 AI barrel I picked up but not sure if I want to build that or the .284 right now. Probably going to keep my eyes peeled for a 22" or longer 7MM-08 barrel and see if I can turn one up.

Basically two different roads to get to the same place!

With the set up you have now, go with the 280AI !

+1 on going with the 280AI, I have one and love it, itll have a little more giddy-up than the 284 will too...

Here's another vote for the 280 Ackley.
