hey guys, i want to get into long range shooting and already own a axis 223 with the regualr barrel and love it. i want to get an axis 223 bull barrel or 308 bore barrel. what are your thoughts on the axis with the heavy barrel in those calibers for long range shooting?

When you say long range, what distance are you referring to? 600, 1000 yards or even a mile. For example, a .308 would be a caliber I would shoot out to 600yards but wouldn't even consider it if stretching it out to a mile.

Just about any of the little sisters in the .308 Winchester family as well as the parent cartridge itself should have the legs to get out to targets at or near 1000 yards given the right load. Whether they will have enough Welly to take game with vitals big enough to reliably hit at that distance is less likely. Still, long range shooting isn't something that someone can just pick up a physically-capable rifle and do. Sage-sounding advice I got was to find one you can feed relatively cheaply and get in a bunch of practice. With the practice Axis I'm working on, I went with .243 Winchester, which tends to have very mild recoil and uses less powder and cheaper bullets with fairly high BCs compared to .308 Winchester. Shorter distance performance is great, and the gun is a pleasure to use. The real problem is finding ranges longer than 200 yards that will let me shoot!

i currently have an axis 223 reg barrel and can shoot pretty well. i have access to a 300 yard range but would like to get into something farther. 300 would be my max right now.

Look at ballistics on 7mm-08, you get a better BC & about 300 more yards before it goes subsonic than a 308.
